COLLIER COUNTY

Last week, WINK News told you about a shooting involving troops on I-75 that injured one person. Now, we are told that a Florida Highway Patrol soldier shot a woman and her mother, and she ended up in a coma.

The woman’s family wants answers about what happened along the interstate in Collier County, near marker 103. The family of 28-year-old Ana Jaun said she drove and then It swerved into the median along I-75. That’s when a soldier took out their weapon and fired at her.

But what caused the deputy to fire their weapon? And how was the interaction between the two in the moments leading up to the shot? Juan’s family reached out to WINK News for answers to these questions.

So far, we know nothing about this interaction because FHP referred the investigation to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement almost immediately. All FDLE has said is “it’s an active investigation.”

Investigators also did not say much to the woman’s family. The family tells us she is still in the hospital and may not make it through. Sadly, they say, they don’t know why.

Ana Juan, 28, is a loving mother to her 7-year-old son. She is a dental assistant, and her family says she has always been a hard worker. They describe her as a loyal sister and the perfect daughter.

Manuela Bacilio is Ana’s mother. “Very happy. A woman with love for everyone,” said Bacilio with tears in his eyes.

Maria Juan is Ana’s younger sister. “She just has a smile that lights up the room, and to see her in this state,” she said through tears. “I’m heartbroken because she’s been through so much, and now I feel like it’s not going to be the same.”

Because of Ana’s kind and caring nature, her mother and sister said what happened along I-75 made no sense. How did this happy woman, who they say had no history of mental illness, end up in the hospital? How did she get shot by a state soldier? Why is she fighting for her life now?

“The police told me she was driving, and the soldier said she got out of the car and said she was holding a knife to her neck and wanted to kill herself, but my mind told me it couldn’t be done. is the truth,” said. Bacilio.

The family said investigators have told them Ana has been shot multiple times and is currently in a coma. But no one said why her car was at the median, where that knife might have come from, or why Ana was on I-75 in Collier County in the first place.

FDLE continues to investigate but will not release any details about that investigation.

Since no one answered Ana’s family questions, they hired a lawyer. His name is Michael Beckman. “ONEAnd we may have to file a lawsuit against the department to get these answers,” Beckman said.

“My heart said, ‘Wake up, Ana, wake up.’ We are all waiting for her. You know we have faith. We have faith in God, but for now, I want Justice,” Juan said. “What exactly happened that day and that time and that moment where the officers felt they couldn’t talk to her.” Investigators have not yet answered that question.

The family also said that Ana’s son stood at the door asking, ‘where is my mother?’ ‘Is she okay?’ ‘When does she come home?’ They said they didn’t want to burden him with the truth now, so they told him she was sick.

As for the soldier who shot her, he is still on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in cases like these.
