CHICAGO – The Civil Police Accountability Office (COPA) is investigating after a woman was found hanged in a cell on the South Side CPD.
On the night of December 17, 33-year-old Irene Chavez, and a member of the city’s LGBTQ+ community, were taken into custody after being asked to leave the Jeffrey pub, located in the 7000 block of South Avenue Jeffrey.
In the early hours of December 18, she was found hanged inside her cell in District Three.
The family said a report provided to them by Chicago police was heavily redacted and provided no further details.

“We are not sure exactly what happened to my sister. I tried my best to find out, I visited the headquarters,” said Iris Chavez. “I asked the detectives questions and every time I hit the red light, the stop sign, the door open. Now, I’m here to actually announce that my sister was found hanged at the district 3 police station, while clearly tied up. ”
