Family of 13 homeless after house fire in Lehigh Acres

A family of 13, including 11 children, is currently homeless. A fire tore through a home in Lehigh Acres on Saturday.

Lehigh Acres Fire and Rescue Control District told WINK News the dryer was what caused the fire. And, it’s more common than we realize.

Within seconds, the house of 13 people was engulfed in flames due to a dryer fire.

Scott Mailhot owns a dryer vent cleaning business. “It’s a typical situation where you have a lot of people using the same dryer and that dryer is being used a lot, and so it builds up quickly, and maintaining the vent,” Mailhot said. That’s even more important,” Mailhot said.

Firefighter Lehigh Acres believes the vent is particularly clogged with lint. Mailhot is the owner of Lint Out Dryer Vent Cleaning. WINK News asked him what signs to look for. “If your clothes are taking a long time to dry, that’s a sign that you need to call someone,” he says.

Another way to stay safe is to check your dryer’s lint trap before clicking start your cycle. However, lint can get past the trap and in time cause more serious problems.

One way to fix this before it becomes a problem is to remove the pipe connecting the dryer to the wall. Then you will be able to make sure that nothing is clogged in it. “It will collect here, and it will also collect in the wall, and that is where we will go next,” Mailhot said.

Now, you should consider calling to increase your expertise for the next step. “Let’s see what we find in this…”

Mailhot went through a pipe several feet long. That’s where hair, dust, lint, and other things can build up over time.

“In some of the homes we visited, you can get this much lint in as little as three or four months, so that depends on how many times you run your dryer,” Mailhot says. Mailhot said.

If you are using your dryer multiple times per week, you must have your pipes checked at least once per year.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, washer and dryer fires are the sixth leading cause of fires, ahead of candles.
