FABIO WARDLEY survived a brutally broken nose to snatch the British heavyweight crown from Nathan Gorman.
The pair collided for the vacant belt left behind by Joe Joyce to contend for world titles in a three-round barnstormer.
Wardley, 27, from Ipswich, was a Sunday League footballer who worked in recruitment before contracting the boxing virus while Gorman was coaching at Team GB and training with the likes of Anthony Joshua.
But Wardley – who is managed by mentor and sparring partner Dillian Whyte – showed an unteachable heart to deal with a smashed muzzle and secure a TKO victory.
“It’s been a little trip and so far so good. I’ve been in some good fights and put on some good shows.
“I’m from the Dillian Whyte School of Hard Knocks, we go to war in sparring and we go to war in the ring.
“I was injured in the second, Nathan is good but I’m used to taking big shots so it’s not a problem for me, I just bite my gumshield and get the job done.
“I want to headline shows, 2023 is the year of Fabio Wardley.”
After a reasonably restrained start, things caught fire in the second and never stopped burning.
Wardley started slow and suffered a disgusting broken nose, but it got him into action.

The handsome contender looked like a completely different person after his horn was rearranged and his breathing would have been a fucking nightmare.
But the Suffolk puncher rallied and then twice smacked the traveler against the canvas.
Gorman was wise and took his time with the count and looked like he could regain his early poise and precision of the uppercut.
But in the third, with Wardley’s nose hanging down, Gorman was decked again and despite hitting the hat-trick, his corner threw in the towel.
