Ex-Tottenham captain and double-winner leaves with tribute planned for West Ham clash

TOTTENHAM has announced the death of former captain Tony Marchi.

The midfielder has twice capped the north London club with 232 appearances.

Marchi played a key role in Spurs’ 1961 Football League victory as well as their 193rd Champions League success.

Regarding Marchi, who began his career at Spurs as a junior, Tottenham said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former player Tony Marchi. I.

“Had captained the Club in the 1950s and was part of the 1961 Football League and our 1963 European Cup winners, Tony passed away at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford on Tuesday night. (March 15). He’s 89 years old.”

Marchi spent two years of his playing career in Italy with Vicenza and Turin.

He made 59 appearances for both teams but returned to Spurs in 1959.

Marchi then went on to make 101 appearances for Tottenham before moving on to management.

The efficient utility man managed both the City of Cambridge and the Town of Northampton.

The club have confirmed their players will wear the armbands during Sunday’s Premier League clash with top rivals West Ham in Marchi’s honor.

Moments of applause will also be heard before the game begins at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Regarding Marchi’s departure, former club Northampton said: “We are sorry to learn of the passing of our former coach Tony Marchi.

“Tony took over the club in 1967/68, succeeding Dave Bowen. We extend our sincerest condolences to Tony’s family and friends.”
