Herrera, who is tied up at the Parc des Princes until 2024, was allowed to leave as he was deemed superfluous.

New coach Christophe Galtier has signed central midfielders Vitinha and Renato Sanches to avoid leaving the ex-Real Zaragoza ace.

The Spain international missed all three of PSG’s opening Ligue 1 games.

And he has now linked for the second time with Bilbao, where he spent three years between 2011 and 2014 before moving to Old Trafford.

A statement from PSG read: “Spain midfielder Ander Herrera has joined Athletic Bilbao on loan with an option to buy for the 2022-2023 season.”

Before adding: “The club wish Ander a great season in the Athletic Bilbao shirt.”

Herrera has spoken of his joy at returning to San Mames, he said Athletic: “Coming back here makes me so happy.

“I am very happy to be able to continue this beautiful story.

“I am looking forward to.”

In his first spell at Bilbao, Herrera scored 11 goals in 128 games.

After joining PSG in 2019, he made 95 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and registering as many assists.
