And the Telegraph claimed Chelsea, keen to sign a midfielder this month, have shown interest.

This comes despite Everton wanting to keep Onana even though they are struggling financially due to FFP which clubs could take advantage of.

But French socket L’Equipe It is now assumed that the 21-year-old has decided against pursuing a move to Stamford Bridge.

That could open the door for Arsenal, who are reportedly interested in the midfielder following Mohamed Elneny’s injury.

The report alleges that the Gunners contacted the Toffees about his services.

But Onana only joined in the summer window and Everton have therefore set a £50million asking price.

Mikel Arteta has already strengthened his squad with the signings of Leandro Trossard and Jakub Kiwior but is looking to further strengthen his midfield.

Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey have been the Spaniard’s starting pairing this season but alongside the duo they only have Albert Sambi Lokonga.

And while the Premier League tops Arsenal’s list of priorities, they are in two other competitions.

They travel to Manchester City in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday and are waiting to discover their Europa League round of 16 opponents.

The trip to the Etihad Stadium could see Trossard making his full Gunners debut after coming on as a late substitute in Sunday’s win over Manchester United.

He missed out on Brighton’s third-round win at Middlesbrough earlier this month, meaning he has NO cup draw and is eligible to play.
