BETH MEAD joked that she’s shooting for Ellen White’s all-time England scoring record after her red-hot run under Sarina Wiegman.
The Lionesses’ new boss has made 27-year-old Mead boss again, with the striker’s audacious chip delivering a win against Austria on Wednesday to propel England to the top of Group A.
The Arsenal star has now recorded a staggering 13 goals and 12 assists in the nine games she has played under the ex-Holland boss.
Her rebound in form comes after she sorely missed out on selection for the 2021 Olympics last summer, but she’s since firmly settled back into Wiegman’s plans.
Manchester City’s White is the all-time leading scorer for England women, ahead of Kelly Smith with her 50 goals for England.
Mead has a long way to go with 26 goals for her country.
She said: “I told Ellen (White) I was after her [goal tally]but no, I’m just happy to score goals for the team and the goal we scored today was a big goal.”
When asked if he was aiming for the Golden Boot at this year’s European Championships, Mead replied: “I didn’t think about the fact that there are some incredible goalscorers in this competition.
“I just want to enjoy my football and the goal, the assists or whatever.”
England’s toughest Group A test is still to come against Norway on Monday, with former Ballon d’Or winner Ada Hegerberg back in contention after five years in exile from the team.
Mead added: “Wednesday was a big win, like I said, sometimes you can’t always win nice and it wasn’t our best performance.
“But we go to the training ground and we learn from it and it’s still a big win that we may not have had in the past.”
