Erik ten Hag ready to get ugly with Man Utd as new boss vows to do whatever it takes to win games for long-suffering fans

ERIK TEN HAG wants to turn Old Trafford into the home of the beautiful game but will win ugly if he has to.

The new Manchester United boss begins his tenure at Old Trafford against Brighton today with a goal of restoring the fallen 20-time champions to top dogs.

But the coach from the nation that brought ‘total football’ to the world is just as determined to do so in style.

The Dutchman may be a Premier League newcomer, but he is aware that winning alone was never enough at United.

And he relishes the chance to put smiles on the faces of long-suffering fans as much as points on the board.

Ten Hag emphasized: “That’s why I’m here and I like it. United want to win, but they want to win in a certain way – proactive, brave and adventurous.

“I think that’s part of the culture here and we want to bring that into play.

“Me, the staff and the players have to do everything to bring success back to the pitch.

“You have to get the maximum out of yourself every day, then you develop individually and as a team.”

However, Ten Hag is all too aware that the hallmark of a successful side is the ability to get results when you’re not playing well.

He said: “If you can’t win in a good, fun way, that’s the mentality and attitude that we need to bring.

“Sometimes there are games you don’t play well but you still have to win.”

Ten Hag has revived previously sleeping giants after transforming a fledgling Ajax side into one of the most exciting in Europe.

But doing the same at Old Trafford after last season’s dismal Premier League campaign is another matter entirely.

Cristiano Ronaldo wants out – something United bosses insist won’t happen – and there’s still no sign of a deal being finalized for top transfer target Frenkie de Jong.

Additionally, fans are planning another protest against the Glazer owners ahead of the upcoming game against Brighton, with feelings as heated as ever.

It’s made for a tumultuous start to Ten Hag’s tenure – and he’s urged fans to turn Old Trafford into a bear pit for opponents instead.

He added: “It’s clear that this stadium is destined to bring about a fight, so I’m hoping for a good working relationship.

“We know we have to set a good example on the pitch. But if we have the right attitude – and by that I mean hard work and courage – then the fans will like it and it will bring the fight back.

“Every game is a challenge, we have to get the best out of it. There will be setbacks, but we have to deal with them.

“That’s the attitude we all need. And if you show it and have a good plan, you will succeed in the end. I am 100 percent convinced of that.

“I see potential in a lot of the players in this squad and yes, I’m convinced I can develop the team further. You can’t change the past, but you can change the future.”
