Garnacho went down under a tough tackle from Kyle Walker-Peters and was substituted after initially trying to continue after treatment.
Ten Hag revealed the youngster is likely to be out for weeks but is confident he will return before the end of the season.
He said in his press conference before the Real Betis game: “I can’t say for sure at the moment but it will take weeks.
“So it’s a serious injury, not expected, but a foul. A serious injury. After Christian Eriksen, we have another serious injury after contact.
“It’s not a good decision and it’s difficult to diagnose so quickly but I saw him limping and that’s why I took him off because it was my last chance to come on and bring him in too.
“He’ll be back before the end of the season. We need to get him back as soon as possible and hope he’s ready.”
Garnacho was seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches in a protective boot.
Speaking out after sustaining the injury, he showed his disappointment.

The Argentine said: “It’s hard to put into words how I’m feeling right now.
“Unfortunately I cannot help my team and my team-mates in the upcoming games in what is a very important part of the season for us at Manchester United.
“I am disappointed to have also missed the opportunity to be with my teammates from the Argentina national team in a great and proud moment for me and my family.
“It’s part of football and part of our job, but I’m already concentrating on my recovery.
“God taught me never to give up and I will make sure I come back stronger than ever!”
