However, selling club Benfica will not receive the full amount of the payment.
Instead, a quarter of the deal goes back to River Plate in Argentina.
Fernandez left River just last summer to join Benfica for just £8.8million upfront [£16m with add-ons].
And half a year later, after starring for Benfica and Argentina at the World Cup, the South American has netted another massive income stream from his sale.
With a 25 per cent sell clause included in his transfer to Benfica, the massive turnover the Portuguese giants have secured will see River rake in a whopping £26.5million.
Additional bonuses mean River will receive a total of £36.2m (€41m) from the Fernandez sale.
The club’s previous transfer record was £31m (€35m) received from Barcelona in 2001 for striker Javier Saviola.
The fee is also more than double what the club received for Manchester City star Julian Alvarez.

Fernandez’s deal with Chelsea erased the previous record of Jack Grealish’s £100m transfer from Aston Villa to Man City.
It also means Chelsea have two players in the top 10 Premier League transfers of all time as of January, the other being Myhkailo Mudryk.
Fernandez is expected to be joined in London by the stunning wag Valentina Cervantes.
