But the Three Lions are still guaranteed a place in the last 16 – unless Wales hand them a four-goal win in Tuesday’s final Group B game.
Even if Wales beat England by four goals, a draw between Iran and the United States would still qualify them.
England fired blanks at the Yanks just four days after they defeated Iran by six, but optimistic boss Southgate praised his side’s “great resilience” against the Americans.
He said: “I’m very happy with how our players put in.
“We didn’t quite have the same clout as we had against Iran. That will happen. It’s tournament football.
“We’re not going to sweep everyone through without having nights like this.
“We have to show different qualities to get a result. But we showed great resilience to defend ourselves against an opponent who kept asking us questions.
“We controlled the game well from behind, but weren’t able to create this clear chance.”

Skipper Harry Kane admitted: “It wasn’t our best performance. We’ve had some good spells.
“We just didn’t get to the end product. It was a complete contrast to Iran, where we took our chances very well.
“We had two or three chances and we didn’t put them away tonight. The USA are a strong team.
“They pushed really well and we knew they were going to come out and give us a hard time. They are a good team and we have to respect them.”
And Kane added: “The result is not the end of the world. That gives us a good position in the group. We know we can play better.”
