England star John Stones says Three Lions are “in there to win it” after 56 years out injured at the World Cup.

ENGLAND star John Stones last night revealed the Three Lions’ hunger to end 56 years of World Cup pain and roared: ‘We’re in it to win it!’

Central defender John, 28, vented his pain over losing the 2018 World Cup semifinals to Croatia, followed by last year’s Euro 2020 on penalties against Italy.

But he promised the England fans that the side are focused and ready to challenge their hearts to win our first trophy since 1966.

The Manchester City star drew on a growing belief that Gareth Southgate’s side are now among the favorites to make it to the final in Qatar – and win it.

And he revealed England’s agonizing recent defeats in the last two tournaments are propelling the squad to glory.

He said: “It’s 100 per cent a huge motivator for the team.

“I always strive for the highest to win the competition – I’ve always said we’re in it to win. I believe we can do it.

“We have to think about everything we’ve done, our ambitions and where that can take us.

“When you’re twice that close now, especially at the last tournament, you never want to go through that feeling again.

“It’s probably more than likely that I’ll make it through my career so I can’t fuss over it, but I always want to do better than last time.

“Finishing fourth at a World Championship was amazing where we come from but we need to improve on that and more.

“2018 was a success in reuniting the nation and everyone who loves English football – but looking back we were so close.

“I never want to go through that again.

“As a team, as a fan, that’s what you dream of as a kid and we never want to feel like that again.

“We have to improve on what we did last time, that’s the most important thing.”

John also revealed the team had been practicing penalty shootouts to banish the spot-kick hoodoo that has dogged English teams for decades.

Southgate is said to have ordered psychological training to prepare his men for the intense pressure when dreaded penalties ensue in the knockout rounds.

The star – a key player in a solid defense that has conceded just two goals in Qatar – said: “Four years ago we won our first penalty shootout and then it didn’t work out at Euro.

“So we worked a lot on penalties and the fine details and worked on individual needs. Sometimes people have to step up and try to find solace in that environment.

“You have to get used to being uncomfortable and for guys like me who are going through the process, what you need clinically at that point.”

John stressed that England were not underestimating West African opponents Senegal on Sunday – and were keen to make fans in Qatar and at home proud.

He said: “We came through those three games in a difficult group and anything can happen at a World Cup.

“We’ve had big surprises before and we don’t want to take anything for granted and always respect the opposition and we will do that.

“It’s been a great journey for all of us as a nation – we want to make everyone proud.”
