England have given France some food for thought after beating Senegal. And BOTH sides have that extra gear

WE certainly gave France a lot to worry about after another superb win in Qatar.

We blew Senegal apart with great football and once again we had great players like Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka.

But let’s also hear it for the men who allowed them to play this way, Jordan Henderson and Declan Rice.

You hear fans criticize almost every time Liverpool’s skipper is chosen – but his team-mates know how important he is.

Jordan gives the team that extra security and he’s also able to turn up at the end of things like he did with the opening goal.

It will be a game against the French.

I was very impressed with them in their 3-1 win over Poland earlier in the day.

I guess they can step it up a notch, but then I think the same of us.

There is so much quality on both sides.

If I have one criticism of our performances so far, it’s that we started slowly. I understand that we probably don’t want to go nuts from the start and risk falling behind, but I don’t want us to make it a habit.

It took us a while to get going against Senegal and they created some chances but they weren’t clinical.

Their front three had a similar pace to the French but without the quality. It could look different with the playing strength and final strength that Didier Deschamps’ team has.

It’s evident that Kylian Mbappe is one of the best players in the world.

He’s lightning fast and it will be a big test for Kyle Walker, who is one of the fastest full-backs out there.

Mbappe’s finishing is also top-notch, as he proved with his brace against Poland.

I also enjoyed watching Adrien Rabiot in midfield – a player who has often been linked with a move to England but nobody took a chance on him here.

Maybe he wouldn’t have even started if Paul Pogba or N’Golo Kante had been fit for this World Cup.

They also have Real Madrid ace Eduardo Camavinga on the bench, who is a Champions League winner.

So when we talk about our strength in detail, let’s not forget theirs either.

Also, check out how well Antoine Griezmann is playing in that slightly deeper role that he’s now playing more in midfield than as a striker. He seems so comfortable there.

And what about my old Arsenal team-mate Olivier Giroud?

If anything, the AC Milan striker has gotten better since moving to Italy, leaving the Premier League behind where he has struggled to get a place.

He’s in his mid-30s but he’s in the best shape of his life and scoring the opening goal against Poland was really good.

But before I scare everyone to death, we also have a lot in our arsenal and will worry France because we hit teams hard at the break and scored our goals in clusters.

It’s great that Harry Kane hit the mark.

Whatever the strikers say, it doesn’t matter if they don’t score, as long as they contribute and the team wins, they want goals. It’s their job.

Harry will feel a bit of the pressure off his shoulders now. It was a thunderbolt for his goal and one we all enjoyed.

At the 2018 World Cup there were a lot of people who thought England were lucky with the draw and felt it was a key factor in us reaching the semi-finals.

Well, no one will be able to do that to us this time. France in the quarterfinals is probably as tough as it gets.
