England 2 USA 1: Hanf and Stanway send packed Wembley wild as lionesses crush world champions

GEORGIA STANWAY’s hot penalty gave England the right to show off to the USA for the first time in five years.

The whole build-up talk revolved around the Lionesses finally forgiving US star Alex Morgan for sipping tea at the last World Cup when she knocked them out of the semifinals.

Arsenal’s Beth Mead said the Euro winners preferred coffee anyway – and they must have had an extra shot ahead of tonight’s blockbuster clash as it was full of drama as the Lionesses beat USA for the first time since 2017.

Shortly after half an hour there was already a penalty, a VAR check for a possible red card, three goals and one more were chalked up.

The World Champions were then almost awarded a late penalty for a handball, but the VAR overruled it because Rose Lavelle’s goal had actually met Lauren Hemp’s BUM CHEEK.

It was certainly a great friendly as Manchester City’s Hemp struck the opener, then Sophia Smith canceled before Stanway sealed it with the point.

The Lionesses are still unbeaten under boss Sarina Wiegman, a streak that stretches back a whopping 23 games.

The only setback for England was that the 76,893 viewership was no bigger than the 87,192 who watched them win Euros at Wembley this summer.

Wiegman’s side dominated it early and just nine minutes later they hit the opener thanks to a delicious dipping and curling cross from Mead in the path of Hemp who bundled them home.

But the Lionesses were left with their tails tucked in as they shirked their defensive duties and gave the USA an equalizer in the 28th minute.

Millie Bright passed from behind a pressurized Stanway whose kamikaze clearance was locked by Sophia Smith.

She made no mistake as she unleashed a sweet low punch into the bottom corner and well above Mary Earps in the 27th minute.

The drama continued just three minutes later when Lucy Bronze was kicked in the face by a Hailie Mace heel in the penalty area – but referee Riem Hussein continued amazingly.

The referee was then called to the monitor to look for a possible red card and penalty and awarded a penalty.

Stanway reinforced and went from zero to hero from her earlier defensive error, whipping a cool low drive into the bottom corner in the 33rd minute.

Just a minute later it was the visitors’ turn to throw themselves into the goal fest.

Smith wreaked havoc on England’s defense and she charged down the right flank behind Millie Bright to knock off Megan Rapinoe.

The OL Reign winger hit Trinity Rodman with a delicious backheel that shot home.

But the chaos continued when there was another VAR check, this time for a possible offside in Smith’s build.

Wembley erupted when the Lionesses were sent off as the goal was disallowed to keep them at 2-1.

And thank goodness for VAR as he quickly overruled late bum-bake drama between Lavelle and Hemp in the 81st minute.
