Encanto Stephanie Beatriz: ‘Many of us feel like outsiders in our family’

Every member was born into a family at Disney’s center new cartoon Encanto blessed with a magical gift – except for the unlucky teenager Mirabel, who never received a gift from the family’s enchanted house on the day she was supposed to. Compared to a sister who can make flowers bloom wherever she goes and a cousin who can take the form of anyone else, Mirabel is definitely an outcast. According to director Byron Howard and one of the film’s stars, her feelings about herself and her family form the emotional core of the film.

“I think many of us feel like outsiders in our families, but we still desperately want to be accepted by our families,” says Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Maya and Dad star Stephanie Beatriz, who voices Mirabel. “It’s a push and pull that I think is super easy to understand. I just draw from my own experience on that.”

While Mirabel loves her family, she’s constantly trying to prove herself to them. All of the Madrigals use their powers to help the greater community, but without any magical abilities herself, Mirabel often feels that she cannot live up to her family name. This puts a particular strain on her relationship with abuela, the matriarch of the family, who has high expectations for all Madrigals. Without her own strength, Mirabel felt like she couldn’t meet them.

“Abuela [and Mirabel’s relationship] really reminds me of my relationship with my mom, like really wanting to be accepted and loved, unconditional love, from someone you feel – no matter what. do conditional on their love, sometimes you feel like conditional love,” says Beatriz. “And you don’t know how to get in there and get around where you feel love.”

From the beginning, filmmakers Byron Howard, Jared Bush, and Charise Castro Smith had to find a way to balance family tension with their care and concern for each other. During the first few months of this process, they spent a lot of time looking at their families for inspiration.

“I think a lot of what you find, if you really start to learn about your family, are these difficulties and challenges,” explains Howard. “At the same time, there are things you want to celebrate. And there are moments of pure joy. One of the things we’ve tried to do is find that relative balance in the family, where you can get a little bit of everything, where it’s like an honest conversation about family. [We] Don’t shy away from the good times either. They really love each other, they just miss each other from time to time, and don’t meet each other enough. ”

Encanto will hit theaters on November 24.
