The California Department of Fair Housing and Employment (DFEH) said it filed a complaint against Tesla on Wednesday in state court.
The lawsuit alleges racist and racist issues at Tesla’s Fremont factory, the company’s main car factory in the US.
DFEH Director Kevin Kish said in a statement: “After receiving hundreds of complaints from workers, DFEH found evidence that Tesla’s Fremont factory was a racist workplace where Black workers suffered racial disdain and discrimination in job assignment, discipline, pay and promotion creating a hostile work environment. ”
According to the DFEH report, the company’s Fremont plant experienced a range of discriminatory practices from employees, management, and supervisors who were “active participants and/or witnesses to grievances.” this racist argument”.
The agency added that one black worker even heard racial slurs as often as 50 to 100 times a day.
Black Tesla workers also reported that they were not only penalized for minor infractions in the workplace more often than their non-black counterparts, but were also frequently denied promotions.
The automaker denied the allegation in a blog post published on Wednesday, writing: “Tesla strongly opposes all forms of discrimination and harassment and has a dedicated Employee Relations team respond to and investigate all complaints.”
The car company added that it has “always disciplined and terminated employees who engaged in misconduct, including those who used racial slurs or harassed others in different ways.” different ways.”
Tesla also revealed in the blogpost that it recently launched a training program that reinforces “Tesla’s requirement that all employees treat each other with respect,” as well as the myriad ways in which they have concerns can be reported.
The company didn’t hesitate to remind people that it was “the last remaining auto manufacturer in California” and that its Freemont factory had a majority-minority workforce that provided jobs that were approved by the company. Highest paying in the auto industry.
Tesla was quick to add that DFEH’s lawsuit is “unfair and counterproductive.”
This is not the first time Tesla has faced legal action stemming from harassment and racism at its Fremont factory.
