It’s currently racing through space at 6,000mph in a direct collision with the moon. It was scheduled to strike at 12:15 on 4 March.

Dr Franck Marchis, senior astronomer at the US SETI Institute, said people would consider the impact a “sudden explosion” in the sky.

He added: “It would be very sad if this impact changed the famous ‘face’ that looked down upon the planet forever.”

The rocket was launched in 2015 by the 50-year-old businessman Muskof the SpaceX company.

It put the climate observatory DSCOVR into orbit a million miles above Earth. Then it’s meant to fly back and burn up in Earth’s atmosphere.

David Rothery, professor of planetary geosciences at the Open University, points out that Falcon 9 is not sterile.

“What we should be worried about is contaminating the moon with living microorganisms,” he said.

“It would not be right to put another ecosystem at risk by introducing organisms from Earth.”
