Elon Musk and his ex-lover Grimes believed she was an IMAGINARY character created to be his ‘perfect girlfriend’, doctor claims

THE on-off romance between Elon Musk and Grimes has had some bizarre twists – including a secret surrogate baby and twins being born at the same time by another woman.

Now a BBC documentary has revealed that the Tesla boss thinks she’s a product of his own imagination – and she agrees.

Speaking on The Elon Musk Show, which continues on Wednesday on BBC2, Vanity Fair journalist Devin Gordon says the Canadian singer revealed the crazy theory in a recent interview.

“She’s told me repeatedly that Musk has this theory about her, that she’s not real, that she’s a simulation created by him and existing in his cerebral cortex as a kind of perfect companion for him,” he says.

“It sounds a little crazy and maybe even a little creepy, but she agrees. She said she feels like this simulation that was created perfectly for him.”

The three-part documentary, which began this week, interviews former colleagues and family members including mum Maye – who opens up about his “violent” childhood.

First wife Justine reveals she found out her husband is divorcing her through a message she left with her marriage counselor.

And British star Talulah Riley – who married the billionaire twice – reveals intimate details of their relationship, including how he approached her by inviting her to a rocket video, and revealed the hard-working CEO’s softer side.

“He has a real innocence about him. What I mean by that is that he feels whatever emotion he’s feeling with incredible purity, whatever that emotion is,” she says.

“He feels things incredibly deeply. I heard he’s cold and unemotional. That couldn’t be further from the truth. He’s the most emotional person I know.”

Barefoot in the snow to prove love

Talulah, then 22, met Musk at London’s Whiskey Mist in 2008, just weeks after he split from his first wife Justine Wilson.

After a whirlwind romance of just 10 days, he said to her, “I don’t want you to go home. I want to marry you,” and she moved into his LA apartment and immediately became a stepmom to his five young children.

Back then, the businessman was on the brink of bankruptcy after investing millions in Tesla – which was struggling to produce a mass-produced electric car – and the rocket company SpaceX.

Court documents showed he used emergency loans from friends to pay for divorce costs and living expenses.

Working 20 hour days and suffering from night terrors, Talulah reveals her fears for his health in episode two of the documentary.

“It was really awful… He was under incredible stress,” she says. “I was afraid he was going to have a heart attack. I kept thinking, God, I just have to keep this guy alive.”

She also unveils a touching story that reveals the more romantic side of the workaholic techie.

“It was one of the worst Christmases. He forgot to get me a Christmas present,” she says. “We were in Boulder, Colorado, so there’s a lot of snow.

“We were in bed and he was like, ‘It’s not that I don’t love you, I really love you, it’s just my brain is exploding.’

“He got up in the middle of the night and disappeared. He came back two hours later. He’d gone barefoot in a t-shirt and shorts, digging in the snow and picking flowers.

“He had driven all over Boulder and came back with this little bouquet of flowers he picked,” and said, “I just wanted to show you how much I love you.”

hovercraft and eels

Talulah says he supported her career and when she had to return to the UK to film St Trinian’s 2 he sent a truckload of flowers to the set, found the names of all the women on set and treated them to flowers, chocolates and champagne .

“I remember the premiere [of St Trinians] He came along and held my umbrella for me while I did book signings and no one knew who Elon was,” she recalls.

“He was very sweet and adorable and very supportive.”

The couple married at Dornoch Cathedral in Scotland in 2010 and say Musk was delighted to be married in the UK.

“I said, is there anything you want at the wedding, and he said, ‘Yes, I want a hovercraft and eels.’ So we had a hovercraft and eels,” she says.

“We were in Paris for a couple of honeymoon days – he did a couple of meetings while we were there – but it was really nice.”

The couple divorced two years later before remarrying in 2013. A year later, Musk filed for divorce again before withdrawing the petition. In 2016, the couple finally separated.

In the documentary, Talulah explains the reason for the marriage separation, reunion, and final separation.

“I found LA really hard from the moment I landed there,” she says. “It was an incredible culture shock. I just wanted to come home and kept trying, but I also really love Elon, so it took us a few years to figure that out.

The pair remain close and she says while she didn’t understand his vision, she believes that one day he may achieve his ultimate dream – to build a human colony on Mars.

“He was kind of able to see the world unfolding in a way that I just didn’t understand and I love having that perspective and I’m grateful for every part of it.

“I hope he takes humanity to Mars because I think that’s his reason for being more than anything.”

Bond on AI theory

After a brief relationship with Amber Heard, Elon Musk first met Grimes via Twitter in early 2018 — and bonded over a high-tech stunt.

“They both made a similarly nerdy joke about a creepy AI theory of the future called Roko’s Basilisk that I don’t even really get,” says Devin. “And her interests are all the same as his and her music is very technological.”

After a brief romance with Amber Heard, Musk fell in love with the Canadian singer, who is 17 years his junior.

In May 2020, they welcomed their first son, but immediately caused controversy with the choice of name – X Æ A-12 – and were forced by California authorities to change it to X AE A-XII because it contained symbols not found in the alphabet were included.

A year later, Musk said the couple had been “semi-separated but still love each other, see each other often and get along well.”

Despite living apart, the couple used a surrogate to give birth to their baby daughter, Exa Dark Siderael – also known as Y – who was born in December.

They kept their birth a secret, only admitting their existence when a journalist heard a baby crying upstairs in their home in March.

Under pressure, she admitted she had a daughter, explaining that severe complications in her first pregnancy meant she didn’t want to risk a second.

Court documents recently revealed by Insider also revealed that he has twins with colleague Shivon Zilis, who were born a month before Y.

Explaining their on-off relationship, Grimes added, “There’s no right word for it.

“I would probably call him my boyfriend, but we’re very changeable. We live in separate houses. We are best friends. We see each other all the time… We just have our own thing going on and I don’t expect other people to understand it.”
