Eight people died in the nightclub shooting

The two heavily armed men arrived at the bar early Saturday morning and began shooting indiscriminately, according to a report by the Security Secretariat.

Six people died at the scene, two others later succumbed to their injuries.

Five people remained hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

According to local media, the victims were the club’s employees, musicians and customers.

Witnesses said they saw people frantically trying to flee the bar in central Jerez, 36 miles southwest of the state capital Zacatecas.

Jerez has been hit by a wave of violence in recent years, forcing hundreds of residents of nearby rural communities to flee their homes over the past year.

The state of Zacatecas is a strategic point for the US drug trade, which has sparked violent clashes between the Jalisco New Generation and Sinaloa cartels.

A mass grave containing 47 bags of human remains was discovered earlier this month under the dance floor of a nightclub in Tenango del Valle.

The grim find believed to be linked to the ruthless Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of the country’s most violent cartels, has been brought to light following the arrest of nine suspected cartel members.
