His career with the Red Devils spanned a 14-year period during which he often impressed and earned the national captaincy, but he failed to shine again in Qatar.
The former Chelsea man took to Instagram to confirm his retirement, writing: “A page is turned today… Thank you for your love.
“Thank you for your unprecedented support. Thank you for all this happiness shared since 2008.
“I have decided to end my international career. The successor is ready.
“I’ll miss you…”

Belgium failed to repeat their impressive performance at this year’s tournament despite finishing behind Morocco and Croatia in their group.
The aging squad could not live up to its title as “Golden Generation”, which is why boss Roberto Martinez has resigned.
The former Everton manager resigned after his side’s embarrassment in Qatar, which was punctuated by sensational reports of unrest in the camp.
