Eddie Jones backs captain Tom Curry, 23, to inspire England youth team as legend Richie McCaw vs Scotland

TOM CURRY is likened to the legend of All Blacks Richie McCaw when Eddie Jones started a mind match against Scotland.

The winger will become England’s youngest captain since Will Carling when he leads Jones’ Six Nations team out into the windy and rainy Murrayfield on Saturday.

At 23, Curry embodies an England team that represents the future, with seven of the starting lineup having ten caps or less.

That allows Aussie Jones to a favorable start, as he looks to put all the pressure on Scotland ahead of the Calcutta Cup clash.

But Jones also realized that the pre-match joke would be meaningless unless his team could cope without Owen Farrell and Courtney Lawes – given the pivotal Curry role.

Red Rose boss Jones said: “Tom reminds me of young Richie McCaw, who was a leader by example.

“As he improves, there will be other pieces of captaincy that come with that but now it’s all about leading by example and moving the team forward.

“That’s how we want to play the game – to get the front foot and put Scotland in the net. Tom is the most important player to win the Big C.”

Curry says Carling – just 22 years old when he was named captain in the 1988 game against Australia – has become a trusted advisor and leader.

The captain, part of the new look back row alongside Lewis Ludlam and Sam Simmonds – who ended four years in exile in England – said: “Will is a really good influencer.

“He is someone we talk to two or three times a week for advice on how to improve.

“It means a lot. You grew up wanting to play for England. Being named captain is a pretty emotional thing. ”

Curry seems a bit awkward when compared to McCaw, who made 148 caps for the team, who skipped the All Blacks 110 times and led them to two World Cups.

He added: “I have to be as true to myself as possible.

“For me personally, it’s not about comparisons but being true to myself to play my best, go out on the field and do it – maybe in the flanker, that means putting my body in dead end.”

Jones recalled Nick Isiekwe in lockout alongside Sarries team-mate Maro Itoje, with Elliot Daly back in his preferred center position for the first time in five years.

Isiekwe’s last and only previous game in England saw him connect in just 35 minutes as they lost 42-39 to South Africa in Johannesburg in 2018 – but Jones insisted: “You never do. love to do it.

“He wasn’t quite ready to play then but he’s definitely ready now. He has made significant progress.

“Elliot has always been an excellent utility player. For this week, the best position for him is outside the center. ”

They can be two years ahead of us in development

Injury issues have allowed Jones to play in England’s “underdog” capacity and he has gone out of his way to put the heat on Gregor Townsend and his side.

“If we were brutally honest, they could be two years ahead of us in terms of development,” Jones claims.

“I’ve never been in a game at Murrayfield, Scotland’s favorite place.

“That’s different for them – carrying the expectation of success.

“For us, that’s normal. We are expected to win every game. So that’s something they’ll have to deal with.

“They have some excellent players but the expectation of winning is another pressure to deal with and I’m not sure how they handle that.

“What we do know is that we’re well prepared and we’re going after them.” Eddie Jones backs captain Tom Curry, 23, to inspire England youth team as legend Richie McCaw vs Scotland
