Painful condition ‘an unknown’ for Sunday’s Jets game originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia
The Eagles start quarterback Jalen Hurts will be officially named in doubt for Sunday’s game against the Jets at MetLife Stadium.
Hurts, who injured his ankle in a game against the Giants last week, has been restricted to two Eagles training sessions this week.
In the early hours of Friday afternoon, head coach Nick Sirianni said a decision had not yet been made.
“We still have time to make that decision. Jalen has a problem,” Sirianni said. “But we still have less than 48 hours for the body to heal, see what happens a little bit more. It’s a mystery right now. “
If Hurts can’t play on Sunday, the Eagles will start the reserve for Gardner Minshew, who was promoted to second quarterback after the Eagles swapped Joe Flacco for the Jets.
Minshew has experience starting in the NFL but has only played a few hits for the Eagles this season.
Hurts, 23, earlier this week said he would play on Sunday but that doesn’t necessarily mean he will. The Eagles will talk to their trainer, doctor and Hurts himself before making a decision.
“If he’s not ready to go, we’ll listen to all the different parties that are there, and if he’s not ready to go, he’s not ready to go,” Sirianni said. “It will be about what his body is telling him and about what our coaches and doctors are saying. If he is ready to go, he will. If he doesn’t, he doesn’t. ”
During the week of practice, Hurts and Minshew split workout reps. When the Eagles held their tutorial on Wednesday, they ran about 125 runs, and the Hurts won more than half of them.
Offense will probably be different for Minshew in the QB position. But there is also a very high chance that the offense will also differ from a limping match.
The Eagles will face the Jets this weekend and then say goodbye next week, but Sirianni insists goodbye will play no part in the decision.
It turns out this: If Hurts can play, he will. If not, it would be Minshew.
“I feel confident with either of them if they have to play,” Sirianni said, “given the way they’ve been preparing all week and conducting their business.”
