In “Fate of the Furious”, Shaw was reluctant to ally with the film’s heroes, much to Hobbs’ disappointment. Even so, between the absolute car cop that unfolds in this particular chapter of “Fast Saga,” it allows the two to interact with each other, which Johnson reveals he’s taken full advantage of.
Talking to CBR.com after the release of “Hobbs & Shaw,” Johnson explained how he used a particular scene to throw an interesting friction with his co-star. “I remember there was a scene where he was working on his car, and I went up to him and I said, ‘So let’s change things up a bit. I want to say something to you in this. I don’t want to tell you what I’m going to say, I just really want you to react and I’ll react to your reaction.'”
At first, Statham took time to get started with the idea, eventually coming up with a “okay, man.” It was the first step Johnson needed to give audiences one of the funniest back-and-forth scenes in the series and a stepping stone to something bigger.
