Conor McGregor: Who will he fight next?

Dustin Poirier cut a similar shot with his rival Conor McGregor as he fell into the exact corner with the Irishman at T-Mobile Arena last night.

McGregor broke his leg against Poirier during their meeting at UFC 264, and their pivotal rivalry hasn’t cooled down since, even though the Americans won the trio 2-1.

And they shared some similarities in their most recent title fight, both of which lost to the defending champ naked at the fight site in Las Vegas.

McGregor became the lightweight champion in 2016, but was stripped of the title by the time he faced Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2018.

And he was submitted by the Russians in the fourth round, with the same move Charles Oliveira would use to finish Poirier in the third round three years later in the same building.

Fans note the aesthetic similarities on Twitter after last night’s UFC 269 main event, with one sharing a duel from their respective bouts, which garnered more than 5,000 likes.

Poirier’s loss to Oliveira was his second in an undisputed title match, after being beaten by Nurmagomedov in 2019.

And Poirier will now have to evaluate his options as he looks to rebuild for a third lightweight title run, or move up to a heavier heavyweight.

Poirier told reporters during his post-match press conference, “I can do anything that I can do,” I can fight for another belt, I can continue another streak. .

“I can swipe, climb and come back anywhere I want – just, ‘Do I want to?’

“That’s the question that I have to look in the mirror and answer; ‘Do I want to do it again? Do I want to go down that road again?’

“That answer will come in the next few days or weeks, I just have to let this pass and see what comes next for me.

“But if that’s my heart and that’s what I want to do, I’ll be here fighting for another world title.”

He could be aiming for a fourth bout with McGregor, which, judging by the Irishman’s current 190lb build, could happen in the welterweight division.

The pair have met three times, the first time in featherweight in 2014 which McGregor won before two lightweight encounters this year, in which Poirier excelled.

He returned to Ireland, and mocked his opponent for a “shameful” performance against the Brazilian, noting that neither Poirier nor Nate Diaz had ever won the undisputed lightweight title. .

“[This was an] Shameful night for him is fine,” McGregor tweeted to Diaz after the battle. It’s a closed defense game. Wtf that? OH! Shocking. “

“Yous champion runner-up is two,” he added in a second tweet. “At least you [sic] You could say you’ve won the previous weight class on the scale.

“At least that’s something hahaha.”

McGregor will be back in action next year, with his trainer John Kavanagh saying it will likely take place between early April and late June.
