He was threatened with the death penalty, and pleaded guilty, receiving a 50-year sentence.

During this time, he was detained in Bang Kwang, and talked to Billy Moore about All or Nothing podcast, Jonathan details some of the gruesome scenes he experienced while locked up.

He recalls one time, a man was assaulted by his cellmates while taking a shower in a panic.

“When the guy covered his face with shampoo in the bathroom, another Thai guy buried his head with this metal lump,” he recalls.

“Literally, like a pumpkin… burying his head in his brain.”

Host Billy, who had been in prison in Thailand for drug offenses, asked: “Did you watch it?”

“Yes, I am not far away,” Jonathan replied, admitting that he saw the body of the man passing him in a trolley shortly afterwards.

“You imagine you have soap on your face, someone standing behind you in the shower, and he keeps banging your head while you’re on the ground.”

Billy also overstated the kind of unimaginable horrors he also witnessed in prisons in Thailand.

On another occasion, he explained that while serving his sentence at Klong Plem Center, he had seen prisoners stab their HIV-infected friends with HIV-infected needles to settle their debts.

After finally being released from prison and returning to the UK in 2012, Jonathan has struggled with some of the enormous social changes that have occurred while he was in captivity.

Describing how he was 33 when he was arrested and 51 when he left, Jonathan noted that he didn’t realize a smoking ban had been put in place.

“Not recognizing any cars, the subway is talking to you, smoking cigarettes and people are going crazy; maid go ‘what the hell are you doing?’ “

But, the former drug smuggler has now turned like a new leaf, and admits he no longer has nightmares about his previous life.
