Drivers are only just realising little-known feature you need to check on your car so it lasts longer

DRIVERS have just realized a little-known feature they need to check to make their car last longer.

An expert has identified a key engine part that should be replaced regularly – and it’s not what you might expect.

In a video shared on TikTok, Scotty Kilmer encouraged everyone to maintain three vehicle components to keep their car running over 200,000 miles.

The 55-year-old mechanic said: “Change your automatic transmission fluid, no matter what the manufacturers say.”

“It doesn’t have to be done that often, maybe every 40,000 miles, but dirt also ruins the transmissions.”

Other tips included changing the engine oil regularly.

Scotty added: “Dirty oil destroys an engine, oil changes cost £23 ($30), engines cost £2,300 ($3,000).

“Also, you should check your battery every once in a while because it’s going to die.

“Modern cars are all computer controlled. If the current is not strong enough, they will be overloaded and may break.”

He suggested that if you keep these three simple characteristics, your car will stay powerful for 240,000 miles.

This comes after a car expert revealed a trick that could come in handy for motorists after buying a new vehicle.

TikTok user @dashishuoche showed on social media that if you press and hold the door lock button for ten seconds, you can activate an auto-lock feature.

Also, motorists are amazed to find that there is a handy device hidden in their cars – and it is very easy to use.

Even if you think you know your car like the back of your hand, you might be missing out on some important extras.

Meanwhile, another mechanic has uncovered the mistake motorists always make with the air conditioner, causing it to get hotter and wasting fuel.

They explained that while it seems “natural,” turning on the air conditioning as soon as you get in the car actually makes the situation worse.

The expert also recommended changing the engine oil and checking the car batteries
