Dramatic video: Coast Guard pulls body from Niagara Falls after car sinks in rapids


NIAGARA FALLS, NY (WIVB) – The U.S. Coast Guard made a daring rescue attempt Wednesday at the edge of Niagara Falls, dropping a diver from a helicopter to pull a body out of a car in somehow enter the rapids about 50 yards from the edge of the falls.

New York State Park Police Cpt. Christopher Rola told News 4 that the driver of the vehicle, a local woman in her late 60s, was presumed dead.

The New York Electricity Authority lowered the water level in the river to assist first responders, follow to New York Governor Kathy Hochul.

“We’ve never had a vehicle in the water this close,” said Rola.

The police investigation into how the woman drove into the river is still ongoing. She was said to be the only person in the car.

The video above shows the dramatic scene as the Coast Guard officer pulls the body out of the water. News 4 chose not to show the entire video because the woman was dead.

The vehicle was discovered submerged in the water just a few meters from the edge of Niagara Falls just before noon.

Police have cordoned off the area. The car is still in the water on the American side of the Falls.

At this time, the car does not appear to be moving towards the edge of the waterfall.
