Other footage shows strikes at power plants causing power outages in several regions including Kharkiv and Donetsk.

Ukraine described the widespread blackouts as an “act of revenge” after recent battlefield humiliations for the Kremlin.

Aside from the strike at a key power station in the Kharkiv region, footage showed the city’s metro system at a standstill.

Flames were also seen at a power plant in Vilnohirsk, in the Dnepropetrovsk region.

The attacks hit the largest thermal power plants in eastern and central Ukraine – Kharkovskaya and Zmievskaya in the Kharkov region, leading to a lack of generating capacity, according to Russian sources.

The facilities provide central access to Ukrainian homes, meaning the attack was aimed at harming civilians.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has criticized the “terrorist attacks” and said the attacks were aimed “to deprive people of light and heat”.

He said: “Even through the impenetrable darkness, Ukraine and the civilized world clearly see these terrorist attacks.

“Cold, hunger, darkness and thirst are not as frightening and deadly to us as your ‘friendship and brotherhood.’

“But the story will put everything in its place.

“And we will be with gas, light, water and food… and WITHOUT you!”

Pro-war Telegram channel Rybar said: “The collapse of the power system has spread to the networks of Kharkiv, Sumy, Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporizhia and Odessa regions.

“It also affected the areas of Donetsk regions controlled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Kyiv region and the country’s capital.”

It added that electric trains stopped “almost across the country” and in Poltava several trolleybuses caught fire right on the streets.

“This measure is a good signal for hotheads who are vocal against the background of the success of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kharkiv region.

“So the impact on the enemy’s critical infrastructure must continue.

“And not only at substations and thermal power stations, but also at bridges over the Dnieper.”

US Ambassador to Kyiv Bridget Brink condemned the strikes, calling them Putin’s “obvious response to Ukraine’s liberation of eastern towns and villages”.

Russia had “attempted to destroy critical civilian infrastructure” with rocket attacks.

It comes as the Russian leader’s troops have suffered catastrophic losses, with Ukraine estimated to have retaken most of the Russian-held territory in the region in a stunning counterattack.

Last week’s attack has prompted thousands of Russians to flee across the border on bicycles in a desperate attempt to avoid the conflict.

As the offensive seems about to collapse, Russian troops leave vast amounts of weapons such as tanks on the battlefield.

A captured commander has revealed that Russian troops chose to shoot and blow themselves up rather than fight in the battle.
