Drag Race Recap: Season 14 Episode 9 – Best Lip Sync Fight [VIDEO]

There is always a strong sense of excitement in the air when the Safe Queens of RuPaul’s Drag Race gather to watch their bottom brothers lip-sync for their lives. But this week the girls were really dizzy.

“Let me tell you something America, this is what we’ve been waiting for!” DeJa Skye confidently asserted himself as the second to last on Friday, Jasmine Kennedy and SplendidShe really sweated it out under the lights of the main stage. Even Angeria Paris VanMichaels chocked out, “Oh yeah! The Jasmine vs. Jorgeous Lip Sync Smackdown!

Expectations were high as the duo channeled their inner Etta James (or Christina Aguilera in burlesque, each their own queen) for a wild showdown of Something’s Got a Hold on Me. Funny, dramatic, insane – the whole spectacle stunned the jury and left Ru unable to make a decision. So she didn’t! Jasmine and Jorgeous were rewarded for their efforts with an elusive double shantay.

“Ladies in the back, please note: this is how you lip-synch your life,” Ru told the Peanut Gallery.

So how did we reach this historic moment? It all started with this week’s mini-challenge being brought back Drag Race‘s time-honoured tradition of celebrity photobombing. Though every queen is deluded in their own way, Willow Pill won because she showed us what it would be like to have a wrecked Mary Lou Retton twerk on Jake Gyllenhaal while he was walking his dog, which we didn’t think we had to see…until we saw it.

Watch the full mini-challenge below:

As the winner, Willow got to choose her teammates for this week’s Maxi Challenge, where two groups presented competing DragCon panels on the “Multifaceted World of Menzes – Dating, Fatherhood and Toxic Masculinity.” Willow grabbed DeJa, Angeria, and Lady Camden as her conversation partners, leaving Bosco, Daya Betty, Jasmine, and Jorgeous behind. (Since we’ve already established that Jasmine and Jorgeous ended up at the bottom, you can imagine which panel was more successful.)

Both DeJa and Bosco were excellent presenters, but the latter provided a little extra that propelled her forward. Not only was every word out of her mouth either smart or funny (sometimes both at the same time!), but she also offered thoughtful commentary on the dangers of toxic masculinity. Other highlights from the panels included: Willow calling Ross Mathews and Carson Kressley prototypical gay mascots, Angeria’s message to dads that loving your gay child doesn’t make you any less manly, and the whole concept of “More Dads Into Drag.” .” This is a platform we can all blindly support.

And we absolutely secure a spot quotes of the week for Willow’s wild self-assessment: “Without drag, I look like a sad Victorian doll. And in drag I look like a sad Victorian doll with whore makeup.”

This week’s runway category was Shoulder Pads™ and the ladies didn’t disappoint. DeJa raised the bar with a goofy, chic nod to Coco Chanel and Linebacker; Camden has given us an adorable transformation from nutcracker soldier to nocturnal temptress; Willow gave us a preview of what menswear will be like in 2079, complete with a spiky Cynthia wig that’s cool enough to forgive her slightly understated shoulder pads; and Angeria took us down Fashion Avenue in a head-to-toe houndstooth look with a matching crown.

Next, Bosco served up Toonami reality, giving us notes from Dragon Ball Z, Power Rangers, and even X-Men’s Jubilee; Jorgeous once again lived out her Selena fantasy, even if her puff sleeves didn’t exactly fit the category; Jasmine channeled her inner Powerpuff Girls villain in a lemon yellow body suit; and Daya came out brandishing “GI Joe doll mixed with a gladiator bitch from hell.”

The judges don’t have everyone receive Bosco’s gaze, but that didn’t stop them from securing their well-deserved second win.
