DoorDash makes major change to its payment options – and customers ‘think it’s genius’
DOORDASH has announced plans to accept SNAP/EBT for eligible grocery shipments.
The company will now allow the payment option in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
DoorDash will work with its grocery partners to authorize their orders online using EBT.
The new payment option will help break down barriers to entry and increase convenience for SNAP users, the company said in a statement.
The move comes as other ecommerce companies like Instacart are now offering the option.
“As part of our mission to strengthen local economies, we’re proud to expand access to food for the communities we serve,” said Max Rettig, Vice President, Public Policy & Social Impact, DoorDash.
After the announcement, people took to social media to discuss.
One Twitter user said: “I think it’s awesome that Doordash now accepts ebt and snap.”
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The payment method is simple and works like any other payment.
Recipients must add their SNAP/EBT card to their DoorDash account by clicking on the “Account” tab and selecting “Payment Methods” in the account settings.
Once settings open, add your SNAP/EBT card number and select Save.
Just note that all eligible SNAP items are determined by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), which means DoorDash must follow these guidelines.
SNAP-enabled items can be found on the USDA website.
OTHER DOORDASH OBLIGATIONS
DoorDash said it’s also working to expand access to food through a “set of new commitments.”
The company said it would take a few steps to support the White House goal of ending hunger by 2025.
The first is to add and promote more product options while working with grocers across the country.
Last year, the company began partnerships with mayors across the United States to expand access to more dining options.
DoorDash said it has begun working with nearly 20 mayors in cities like Oakland, California; Denver; Tampa, Florida; and Albany, New York.
WHAT IS SNAP?
SNAP is the federal food stamp program.
The program provides families with a preloaded electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card, which they can use to purchase groceries from authorized stores.
For authorized stores that accept food stamps, see the Department of Agriculture’s SNAP Store Locator Tool.
To apply, you must select the state you live in as applications and processes differ.
Generally, SNAP is limited to individuals with gross incomes up to 130 percent of the federal poverty line.
You can view the poverty guidelines on the US Department of Health and Human Services website.
Millions of Americans were at the forefront of skimming.
Wegmans also began accepting EBT and Snap payments for online grocery orders earlier this year.
