Local broadcaster CNN Brasil quoted federal police sources as saying a dental arch exam confirmed the remains belonged to Mr Phillips.

A second body, thought to be that of indigenous expert Bruno Pereira, is still under investigation.

Police are still searching for the boat in which Phillips and Pereira were last seen alive going down the Amazon.

Five suspects are now being questioned by police after two brothers confessed to the murders earlier this week.

Three are suspected of killing the couple, while the remaining two may have ordered the murder and concealed evidence.

The police warned of further arrests.

The remains were uncovered earlier this week in a grove in a remote jungle area in Atalaia Do Norte.

Police were led to the grave by a fisherman who previously confessed to killing the two men.

Dom Phillips’ wife, Alessandra Sampaio, said the sad discovery “puts an end to the agony of not knowing” what happened to her husband.
