The tournament follows a familiar format with 24 countries divided into six groups of four – but will the third-placed teams make it to the knockout stages?

Does finishing in third place qualify for the final AFCON-16?

Similar to Euro 2021, which took place last year, the top two teams in each group will automatically qualify for the knockout stages.

But the four highest ranked third-place teams will also join them in the final 16 leg.

The bad news for those countries is that they will face a side that has already topped their table.

As the competition gets to the final stage of 16, it’s a simple knockout until we get the finalists on February 6th.

There will be extra time and penalties in every draw if they end in a draw, with a third place match for the two semi-final losers.

How can I watch AFCON 2022?

You can watch all the stages of the group live Sports sky in the United Kingdom.

All matches will be broadcast on the service, with non-subscribers able to watch by grabbing a NOW TV ticket.

And as a treat for viewers, the following stages of the tournament will be broadcast live by BBC.

As a result, two of the quarterfinals, both the semi-finals and the final, will be broadcast freely.
