The maggot, found in a plate of pasta, is believed to have been served to a sailor stationed on HMS Nelson in Portsmouth.

Military catering is overseen by Sodexo, which won a £54million order last year despite repeated quality complaints.

Three months ago a soldier at Windsor Castle posted video of a maggot on his plate.

Colonel Philip Ingram, a former military intelligence officer, said the latest incident needed to be investigated.

He added: “They say an army marches on its stomach.

“But what is being served now is shocking and the only marching will be to go to the door.”

One social media user said of the maggot, “Probably they charged extra for it.”

The MoD said it was checking whether the photo was taken on HMS Nelson, adding: “We take this very seriously.”
