Experts hope the unique event will clear the thick layer of dust covering the lunar surface and reveal its mysteries.

The rocket was due to slam into the dark side of the moon at 12.15pm yesterday after plunging through space at 6,000mph.

Experts can’t be sure if it was part of a Falcon 9 rocket launched from Elon Musk’s SpaceX in 2015 or remains of a Chinese launch vehicle.

The Falcon, which was carrying a weather satellite, entered a “chaotic orbit” after experts failed to bring it back.

The impact crater is on the moon’s side that’s always away from Earth – so experts will have to wait for spacecraft to take pictures in about two weeks.

dr Franck Marchis of the SETI Institute, which looks for signs of extraterrestrial life, said: “One of the things we want to see is if there’s evidence of water – and maybe even life.

“It’s the first time we’ve gotten a proper look under the dust. Maybe we can find fossilized remains of something.

“So far we have found no evidence of biological life on the moon, but we have not dug below the surface.”

However, life forms are unlikely to resemble the clangers, the mouse-like creatures from the ’70s that inhabited a moon-like planet.
