DIMITRI PAYET has revealed he has turned down a transfer to Manchester United and a host of other big clubs to return to Marseille from West Ham.
The Hammers recruited the now 35-year-old from Marseille in 2015 for £10million.
But after a successful couple of seasons, during which he was successively voted the club’s player of the season, the Frenchman left the London stadium in poor conditions.
The attacking midfielder went on strike when he decided to leave the Hammers – leading to a bitter row with the club’s manager at the time, Slaven Bilic.
Payet’s irritation paid off and he was whipped back to Marseille for £25million in 2017.
But the rebellious former France international with 38 caps could have ended up at Man United after his relationship with West Ham collapsed as he claims the Red Devils are keen to sign him.
However, Payet says he decided to return to France rather than join United or any other interested party because he felt it was the best choice for his family.
Speaking to RMC on Getfootballnewsfrance, Payet explained: “I’m not one to live with regrets. I made a decision related to both football and family and returned to Marseille. There were other clubs, big clubs.
“There was Manchester United and others. It was a personal and family decision. I think it was for the best for me and my family.”
And he also previously revealed that the goal of playing with France at the 2018 World Cup has sparked his desire to return home.

His decision to do so seems to have worked out for him as he is currently enjoying his best-scoring season since returning to the Ligue 1 club – so far he has hit the net ten times in 27 games in all competitions.
Payet also contributed nine assists for the French side.
Just last week, the midfield maestro showed his offensive tenacity when he scored a goal-of-the-season contender in Marseille’s Europa League quarter-finals first leg against PAOK.
And judging by Man United’s dismal form this season – which saw them lose again to relegation strugglers Everton on Saturday – Payet has his lucky stars to thank for shunning the theater of dreams.
