Diego Arrua dead: The trainer and husband of boxing star Sabrina Perez dies at the age of 58 after a heart attack during the fight for the world title
BOX coach Diego Arrua has died aged 58 after suffering a heart attack during his wife’s world title fight.
Arrua fought Australia’s Skye Nicolson on Friday for her wife Sabrina Perez’s interim WBC featherweight title.
He collapsed between the ninth and tenth rounds of the world title fight after suffering a heart attack at the Auditorio Municipal Fausto Gutierrez in Mexico.
Unfortunately, he did not recover and died tragically.
WBC President Maurico Sulaiman confirmed Arrua’s tragic death Twitter.
He said: “It is with deep sadness that we learned of the sudden death of Argentine coach Diego.” [Arrua].
“Who suffered a devastating heart attack during the fight with Sabrina Perez in Tijuana.”
Matchroom Boxing – who suggested the fight – also paid tribute to the late Arrua.
They tweeted: “Our thoughts and condolences are with Sabrina Perez and her loved ones.”
Perez suffered a unanimous decision loss to Nicolson, with judges scoring the contest 99-91, 98-92 and 97-93 in favor of the Australian.
However, she was not in the ring when the result was announced.
It’s likely that she ran backstage to try to be with her late husband.
