How were the children allowed to remain in the home and how did CPS miss the warning signs?
A Detroit mother has been charged with murder after the body of her 3-year-old son was found in a freezer on Friday, according to Wayne County prosecutors.
The child’s mother, Azuradee France, 31, was also charged by Wayne County Attorney Kym Worthy with first-degree child molestation, torture and concealing a death, all of which are felonies, officials said.
France was charged on Sunday and pleaded not guilty to the death of her three-year-old son Chase Allen, prosecutors said, according to ABC News.
The child’s body was discovered early Friday after police officers responded to the home to conduct a health check, Detroit Police Chief James White said at a news conference Friday. Officers found the child’s decomposing body in a freezer, White said.
Blood on the hands of CPS?
According to the boy’s grandmother, Toni Hayes, the macabre discovery came despite child protection services (CPS) being called to the family home “dozens of times.”
According to Hayes, the suspect’s mother, the boy was blind, Fox News reported.
Hayes said the boy’s mother couldn’t handle him and recounted family members who had repeatedly asked CPS to take care of the boy – only for the agency to continually return the boy to his mother.
Family members also claimed CPS visited the dilapidated home where the 3-year-old lived with five other siblings “dozens of times” in 2022 alone, only for the mother to never let anyone inside.
“I called CPS about her. A lot of us called, and they came out and gave her their kids right back to her,” Hayes told Fox News.
Investigators said they weren’t sure at this point how long the 3-year-old boy’s body had been in the freezer or when or how he might have died. The coroner ruled the boy’s death a homicide, police said.
The case will be further investigated and the facts and evidence will be filed at the pre-trial.
What about the other 5 kids?
The cause of death was not specified.
“The alleged facts in this case have astounded even the genuinely jaded,” Worthy said in a statement.
Notably, the boy’s grandmother previously said she hadn’t seen her grandson since March.
The five other children who lived in the home were examined at a hospital and placed in the care of child protection services, police said. The whereabouts of the children’s fathers remained unclear.
France remains in detention and her next hearing is scheduled for July 8, prosecutors said.
