Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder was honored with a life-size statue in his hometown Tuscaloosa in Alabama.

Boxing’s hardest puncher hasn’t fought since he was KO’d by Tyson Fury in their trilogy fight last October.

And Wilder has previously suggested he could retire from the sport following the brutal loss.

Despite his uncertain future in boxing, Wilder will be honored in his hometown on May 25 for his sporting achievements.

A life-size statue was commissioned to celebrate his 44-fight career to date.

Reacting to local news, Wilder confessed that he “didn’t even expect” such an honor.

The 36-year-old also hinted at a possible return to the square circle, saying he will “set a lot of records” and break them.

He said: “I didn’t even expect it.

“That is why you say that God works in mysterious ways.

“I know I will set many records and break many records on my journey.

“But this, this is something that God is giving — not just to me, but to my state and my city.

“I can only see people coming into the state of Alabama and visiting the city of Tuscaloosa and looking at the statue.

“It will be something for my children, their children, their children’s children.

“I’m very happy with this project, I’m really looking forward to it.”

Wilder’s comments on a possible return to the ring echo those of WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman

Sulaiman told Sky: “I spoke to him a few months ago, he’s doing great and looking forward to continuing his boxing career.”
