Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick Wins 20th Congressional Seat – CBS Miami

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick is claiming victory, although her opponent is yet to concede a goal in the race.

“No one thought that a little girl like me who grew up in the district, raising her daughter alone, to be here, would have such meaning here. The daughter of immigrants viewed my parents day and night as a taxi driver and a maid, but we succeeded,” says Cherfilus-McCormick.

It was hard to hold back tears as Congressman-elect Cherfilus-McCormick thanked supporters for helping her win Florida’s 20th congressional seat.

“We know what the difference is. We had a message for the people and we fought for the people. We were on the ground. We knocked on the door. We hire people – most of the money goes towards stimulating the economy and trusting the people,” she said.

However, her opponent decided not to concede the race.

“Now they call the race, I didn’t win, so they say, but that doesn’t mean they lost too, it doesn’t mean we lost,” said Republican Jason Mariner.

Hours before the polls closed, Mariner filed a lawsuit alleging that there was a problem with the ballots in Palm Beach and Broward Counties.

“And we’ll also have some stuff coming out that we’ve been exploring recently,” he said.

As for the results, they weren’t really surprising. Democrats outnumber Republicans by nearly 5 to 1 in the region.

“Well, it’s not the first time I’ve played against an opponent who won’t concede, so it’s not our first, and at the end of the day nothing can stop the movement, ‘ said Cherfilus-McCormick.

CBS4’s Jacqueline Quynh contacted both the supervisors of the election offices in Broward and Palm Beach. They told her it took 14 days to certify the votes, then Mariner had 10 days to decide if he wanted to challenge the results.
