The areas are: Columbia Heights, Brightwood Park, Benning, Historic Anacostia and Washington Highlands/Bellevue.

Bowser stated the areas have been chosen in an effort to curb gun violence within the metropolis.

“There isn’t any place the place gun violence is suitable in our metropolis,” Bowser stated. “That is exactly why we’re dedicated to creating certain that we’re investing in focused applications and initiatives that defend our residents and produce assets to the communities that want it most.”

The initiative runs from Oct. 1 to Dec. 18 and focuses D.C. police assets and crime-fighting expertise to struggle violent crime within the chosen areas.

D.C. police has been working a Summer season Crime Prevention Initiative since 2010, and determined in 2019 to ascertain an identical program for the autumn. Bowser stated areas lined by the initiative in previous years have seen reductions in violent crime between 15% and 30%.

In a press release, D.C. police chief Robert Contee praised the initiative’s successes and stated the division can be working to convey the crime prevention to the areas highlighted by this 12 months’s initiative.
