Darts star Michael van Gerwen deposits more than £10m in prize money – but jokes he has to ‘ask his wife where it is’

FLUSH Michael van Gerwen has banked over £10m in prize money and won 148 PDC titles in 15 years.

But despite his fame and fortune, he says winning is still important to him – and that’s why he’s crying tears of joy.

When Van Gerwen, 33, won the Players Championship – his fourth TV Major this year – on the last weekend of November – he couldn’t stem the waterworks.

The emotion, he says, was because his little girl had asked him to bring home a trophy from Minehead.

When you’ve been successful for so long, it can be difficult to maintain focus and desire.

The late boxing legend Marvin Hagler once said that “it’s hard to get out of bed at 5am to do some street work when you’re sleeping in silk pajamas”.

But regardless of what he wears at night, Van Gerwen insists he hasn’t lost his appetite or hunger on the oche.

The Dutchman – a three-time darts world champion – is tonight’s favorite to eliminate Welsh qualifier Lewy Williams.

He said: “I always expect to win, otherwise I wouldn’t go. Otherwise I would stay at home.

“That’s all you should have in mind. If you don’t have that in mind, it’s not the right way of thinking.

“You saw with the players how much it still means to me. My hunger is not gone.

“I keep promising my daughter the trophies. I want to win it for her.

“I told her I wouldn’t come home empty-handed. Of course I care. I’m only human Every tournament has something special.”

Van Gerwen said he broke the £10m mark in his most recent triumph – with a prize of £100,000 – and replied: “It’s a lot of money. I have to ask my wife where the money is!

“We’re privileged, aren’t we? I know that of course. It’s good. We can be satisfied with that.

“The PDC did a good job for us players, we can earn good money with it. I’m happy with that.

“As long as you keep performing, the rest will come automatically.”
