Danny McGuire thinks the Super League system isn’t doing Toulouse any favours

DANNY McGuire admits the Super League – and the cost of living crisis – are making Toulouse’s survival even more difficult.

But the Hull KR interim boss wants to make it even tougher by leading his side to victory.

Olympique are currently two points behind bottom of the table with six games remaining and many people say they should have at least a year before relegation.

And McGuire believes the British system is doing little for Sylvain Houles’ men, any more than the bills are skyrocketing this side of the Channel.

He said: “I have a little sympathy. To be honest I don’t think we make it easy for them.

“I’m all for trying things in new areas and the Catalans have been successful, but it will be a few more years for Toulouse to succeed.

“That means more investment, more time – we don’t make it easy for them to see the longer-term picture.

“Relegation is built into our culture – it’s not really British sport without relegation – but I wouldn’t have a problem if they had a time to adjust and adapt.

“That can help them develop their own players because I think that’s the only way they’ll be successful. Hacking and moving is not a good model for them.

“It’s a really big challenge for them when they come and expect to adapt and adapt in a year’s time. I’m very interested in them doing well because it’s good for the game to have another French team in the Super League.

“Toulouse is a huge city and friends have gone to Toulouse to see Leeds – but times are tough and not many fans have the wherewithal to see their team there.

“That also makes it more difficult for Toulouse!”

McGuire welcomes back several older heads for tonight’s clash, but youngster Phoenix Laulu-Togaga’e will start at full-back.

And the 19-year-old admits dad Quentin, who is still playing at Sheffield, is passing on ips on how he should play.

He said: “Dad gives me advice every day, he looks at training and matches and it’s good to give me specific advice.

“I ask him for tips. I still live with him, so I can’t escape him!”
