Daniel Craig Says Drunk Bond Pitch Landing Sam Mendes 007 Directs Gig

Craig called producer Barbara Broccoli the next morning and said, “I think I asked Sam Mendes to direct last night.”

Daniel Craig recently hung up his suit and tie like James Bond after five films, starting with 2006’s “Casino Royale” and ending with 2021’s “No Time to Die.” Two of those movies are “Skyfall” and “Spectre” directed by the Academy Award-winning director. be a director Sam Mendes, who gave the helm to Cary Fukunaga in “No Time to Die.” Craig recently sat down with This Hollywood Reporter for an episode of the Awards Chatter podcast (through the Playlists) to discuss his Bond swan song – and a particularly gory origin story came up involving Craig and Mendes at Hugh Jackman’s Christmas party.

Craig said he had had a few drinks at Jackman’s party when he approached Mendes and boldly suggested he direct “Skyfall” after Marc Forster’s “Quantum of Solace” (which was a serious disappointment). ).

“I was a bit drunk for sure, Sam was late and I hadn’t seen him in years, I hadn’t seen him since ‘Road To Perdition,’” Craig said. “Sam sat down and we were drinking together and it occurred to me, it’s like one of those [moments]. We did [already] there were conversations about directors… and that became clear to me as I sat across from him. I thought, ‘Of course.’ And I basically just said, “I probably shouldn’t say this, but do you want to direct the next Bond movie?”

Craig went on to say, “And he just did this, he just looked at me [and squinted] and say, ‘Yes.’ And then I said, ‘Now I’m damned.’ I’m sure there’s someone I have to talk to about that before I ask to be the director. It’s not my responsibility, but I was drunk! ”

Craig says the next morning brought a rude awakening when he had to phone Barbara Broccoli to apologize in advance and explain what had happened. “I called Barbara right after that and thought, ‘Oh my gosh, let’s get going, I’m damned now. I said, ‘I think I asked Sam Mendes to direct last night.’ “

Her response, he said, was “Wonderful, great.”

After directing two Bond films, Mendes went on to direct the Best Picture nomination “1917.” A new James Bond director (or actor) has not been set yet.
