Professor Rupert Pearse, an intensive care physician in London, said the vaccine would have a “very important impact” in preventing more hospitalizations, even with Omicron.

The rapid rise of infections and the spread of Omicron is why the government is extending booster vaccines to all adults.

A second dose is also now being offered to teenagers – in an effort to make sure everyone is protected this Christmas.

Jabs prevents severe illness and the three doses are estimated to be 80 per cent effective against the Omicron strain, figures from Imperial College London show.

The Sun is also calling on readers to sign up for the Jabs Army campaign so that the rollout goes as smoothly and as quickly as possible.

Boosted shot is the best defense against Omicron, with early data showing it pushing efficiency up to 75%.

Dr Jenny Harries, UKHSA Chief Executive, said: “Once again, we urge everyone who is likely to receive a boost to come forward and do so. That is the best defense we have against this new highly contagious variant. “

The UK today is set to reach almost 30 million people boosted with a third dose – half the population.

In the UK, more than two-thirds of people aged 18 and over have now received their extra protection, including more than four in five people aged 50 and over.

In the statistics published today, it was revealed that more than 51.5 million people have received the first dose, 47.1 million people have received two doses and 29.8 million people have received the booster dose. .

However, the number of cases is also at a record high due to the rapidly spreading Omicron variant.

Professor Pearse warned delaying taking extra steps to control Covid could harm the NHS.

He told BBC Radio 4: our health will be affected.

“In London, we’ve seen cases double, and I think we’re seeing a wave of admissions now.

“If you look at the figures across the UK, you don’t see an increase in hospital admissions. But we knew it was coming and it was going to spread across the country.”

Daily hospital admissions in the UK have increased by 6% in the past week.

But in London, enrollment jumped 30% in a week.
