Iwan reached #1 on the iTunes chart midweek after beating Kate Bush’s single “Running Up the Hill” to number one.

The Football Association of Wales then invited the 78-year-old to meet with the squad at their Vale of Glamorgan base on Friday ahead of the Nations League clash with Belgium.

Iwan delivered a rousing speech to Wales captain Bale and his team-mates, who face USA, Iran and England in Group B, when he said: “You don’t know what you’ve done for the Welsh nation.

“Everywhere I go, what people tell me, whether they speak Welsh or not, whether they live north or south, east or west, in Wales or outside of Wales, what you’ve done has changed the face of Wales.

“I had the privilege of being a part of it with you. It was a great experience.

“I wish you the best against Belgium, wish you the best in Qatar, I don’t think I’ll see you there.

“But you can win the World Cup because you play with heart.

“And that’s what you’ve given the Welsh people – confidence and belief in yourself, because you believe in yourself. You can beat the world.”

Iwan from Carmarthenshire received a shirt signed by the Welsh World Cup heroes – with the name of his Welsh anthem ‘Yma o Hyd’ on the back.

Then he had a photo with captain Bale and manager Robert Page.

Wales began singing the song, which was originally recorded in 1981 and released in 1983, during Euro 2020 in Baku last summer when squad DJ Chris Gunter added it to his playlist.

The song tells the story of how the Welsh language and culture has survived against all odds for more than 2,000 years.
