A distraught father yelled ‘I need a bullet’ after killing his six-year-old son in a 80 mph car crash.
After the horror hit in Rangiora, New Zealand, Niklas Gebhardt, 32, is said to have begged to swap places with his son Lachlan.
Gebhardt was reportedly driving at 130 km/h when entering a corner – where the limit was 15 km/h – and made no attempt to brake before the car left the road on November 5, 2019.
The car burst into flames after hitting a tree, and while Gebhard was being pulled out of the inferno by another motorist, Lachlan tragically died inside.
After Gebhardt was taken to safety, he is said to have been heard saying: “Put me back in, trade me with my son, I want to trade.
“My son is in the back, he’s such a good boy, he’s such a nice boy, I want to trade. I need a bullet.”
According to Stuff, Gebhardt has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Christchurch High Court.
He will be sentenced on August 3rd.
Gebhardt shared custody of the boy with his ex-partner Kim Manson and he had agreed to pick him up at 4pm from a swimming pool in Rangiora, the court heard.
After putting Lachlan in the back of the car, he began accelerating and is said to have passed a car and then returned sharply to his own lane to avoid another vehicle.
The father drove dangerously on until he came to a sharp bend and the car went off the road and crashed into a tree.
Investigators reportedly found that the car had traveled 24 meters horizontally and seven meters vertically before crashing into a tree.
Motorists rushed to the fireball crash and Gebhardt was pulled from the car before the fire became too intense to see if anyone was still inside.
Gebhardt suffered 30 percent burns and a thigh fracture in the accident.
He claimed he remembered nothing about the crash when questioned by police seven weeks after his son’s death.
However, he was later charged with manslaughter.
In September 2020, 10 months after the accident, he reportedly entered a police station, undressed, refused to put them back on and asked police to put him in jail.
He appeared in court and was charged with indecent exposure and sentenced to one month in prison.
His attorney said Gebhardt had “difficulties” with trauma issues.
