Cuphead Show’s infectious theme song! Almost unapproved

Netflix’s The Cuphead Show! Bring the exciting energy of the game to life with short, in-circuit comedy episodes adventures of old Mickey Mouse. You’ll be immediately drawn into the opening sequence, which combines an infectious theme song with stunning, repulsive visuals. It’s such a powerful bang that you might not even hit skip when uploading the next episode. But while it was an integral part of the show, that almost didn’t happen.

“The subject was controversial,” said art director Andrea Fernandez. “It’s not a given that it’s going to happen. Because [in] streaming, it doesn’t have to happen. Dave [Wasson] really adamant that he wants it on the show. Not only did he want a theme and an intro, but he also wanted a theme that looked crazy.”

“There has been a lot of discussion about do we even really need the intro on a streaming service where so many people skip the intro?said executive producer Dave Wasson. “I’m like… my kids, if they’re watching a show and they really love the intro, they won’t skip it. I think if we do this right, this could be something that people really love. And then we [Wasson and co-executive producer Cosmo Segurson] wrote the song. They are like, Let’s make it 15 seconds long. And we wrote a 45-second song. We were like, We can not! We shortened it a bit. We can’t be longer than 45 seconds! It must be so.

Wasson quotes the introduction of Spongebob Squarepants and Pee-duck Playhouse is the “gold standard” he wants to emulate. Those opening sequences not only have really catchy theme songs, but also contain lots of fun visual details that are ideal to watch over and over again.

But the team had to create the opening scene in parallel with their work on the show. As Fernandez puts it, there was no extra “magic time” or extra budget to produce the footage, and even if that went against their best interests, the team could afford to make it happen. that movie scene. So they omitted it among other projects for the show.

“My favorite news about the intro is that we have limited our stop-motion positions. We have been told, Don’t even think about it,” said Fernandez. “I remember being like, YES … but beg our chain manufacturer, But what if we have a map open and then it opens? I like, I will draw a map. No new sets need to be built.

“I look back on that trailer now, and I feel like I was lucky that we talked so sweetly with our line producer to get one more shot. It pays off. It certainly paid off. ”
