Cristiano Ronaldo won’t resign until he’s beat Pele’s record 1,281 goals with 556 to go, claims Neville – The US Sun

CRISTIANO RONALDO will not resign until he breaks Pele’s goalscoring record, according to Gary Neville.

Ronaldo, who is still in phenomenal physical shape at the age of 37, is credited with 817 goals as a professional.

The Manchester United ace scored his 700th club goal in yesterday’s 2-1 win over Everton.

And he’s also bagged an incredible 117 for Portugal…so far.

His stunning record has seen him become Real Madrid’s all-time top scorer and he’s also scored a number of goals while playing for Juventus.

Ronaldo has scored 450 times for Real, 101 for Juve, five for Sporting Lisbon – and now 144 for United.

But it’s still a little behind Brazilian icon Pele, who has recorded 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances.

His tally, however, included goals scored in friendlies, leaving Ronaldo around 464 goals away at the moment.

Ronaldo’s former team-mate Neville believes the Portuguese hero’s obsession with being considered the greatest footballer of all time means he wants to unseat Pele.

Neville told Sky Sports in 2020: “It’s an obsession, an absolute obsession, to score goals, to push yourself every day and to be as fit as possible.

“I think he has increased his professionalism every year and made progress.

“I have no doubts that he wants to play, and Jamie does [Carragher] James Milner mentioned wants to play in his late 30s – 40 I think he [Ronaldo] has a plan to take over Pele’s record.

“I really think he wants to beat Pele’s numbers, I think that’s where he is in his mind.

“He wants to be the greatest of all time and that’s his only goal. Understanding if the teams he’s on will win trophies and be successful when he’s the all-time greatest.”
