Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo was excluded from the FIFA 22 Team of the Year for the first time since its inception, because Lionel Messi, Robert lewandowski and Kylian Mbappe take the front position.
The players were selected by a fan vote from a pool of 80 nominees. The final team selected was:
Goalie: Gianluigi Donnarumma (PSG and Italy)
Defender: Joao Cancelo (Manchester City and Portugal), Ruben Dias (Manchester City and Portugal), Marquinhos (PSG and Brazil), Achraf Hakimi (PSG and Morocco)
Midfielder: N’Golo Kante (Chelsea and France), Jorginho (Chelsea and Italy), Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City and Belgium)
Striker: Lionel Messi (PSG and Argentina), Kylian Mbappe (PSG and France), Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich and Poland)
Cristiano Ronaldo has been selected as part of the FIFA Team of the Year for the past 11 years. The Portuguese superstar had a stellar individual year but no significant success within the team.
Cristiano Ronaldo ends 2021 with 47 goals and 7 assists in 65 games in all competitions. The striker also broke the record for the most goals, the most international goals and the most goals scored at the European Championships. However, he only won the Coppa Italia with Juventus on the silver title.
Another notable shortcoming of the team is Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah, who also had a statistically great year but failed to have any individual or collective success.
Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Kylian Mbappe deserve to be chosen instead of Cristiano Ronaldo
It is difficult to choose Ronaldo over Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski or Kylian Mbappe because these three have all had excellent seasons of their own.
Lionel Messi led Argentina to its first Copa America title since 1993, while also winning the title of Top Scorer and being named Player of the Tournament. The striker ended the year with 43 goals and 18 assists in 61 appearances in all competitions and was also awarded his seventh Ballon d’Or.
Meanwhile, Lewandowski is considered by many to be football’s best player of 2021. The striker has had an incredible year in front of goal, scoring 69 goals in 59 games in all competitions. The Pole also broke Gerd Muller’s record for most goals scored in a single Bundesliga campaign, ending the 2020-21 season with 41 goals in 29 league appearances. He was also named the FIFA Player of the Year in 2021.
Kylian Mbappe ended the year with 51 goals and 28 assists in 67 appearances in all competitions while winning the Coupe de France and UEFA Nations League with PSG and the France National Team respectively. The striker ended the year with the 2nd most goals and assists among any player in world football.
